July 18, 2003

Mentally disabled teenager Paul Childs was facing Denver police officer Jim Turney when Childs was shot to death at his home July 5, according to preliminary autopsy results obtained by News4.

Childs was shot four times - in the shoulder, chest and abdomen.

The autopsy will indicate the wounds from the shots all came from the front, News4 reported Thursday night.

No illegal drugs or alcohol were found during the autopsy, but Childs had Tegretol, an anti-seizure medication.

Childs suffered from seizures.

The autopsy could be completed as soon as today.

The Denver district attorney's office is investigating the case, and Turney is on leave after being accused of threatening to shoot his former mother-in-law.

Turney also shot and killed 18- year-old Gregory L. Smith Jr. in January 2002.

The Childs case has drawn national attention.

The family has hired attorney Johnnie Cochran to represent them.

Family members have said they called police July 5 to help the 15- year-old boy, who was threatening the family with a knife.

The family called 911 about 50 times in the past 3 ½ years, records show.
